Red Dead Redemption Options

This place looks much akin to Red Dead's barren wastelands right now, but my exams are over soon so I'll try and breathe some life back into the place when summer kicks off

But anyhoo, Red Dead is a superb game I just had to mention. GTA in the wild west, pretty much. Single player robbed most of my evening tonight, and has been a blast. I started with some of the story missions - which are great btw, with some amazing voice acting, and typical Rockstar dialogue. But I got completely sidetracked for ages doing all the optional stuff for most of the time. I did some hunting challenges, which are great as you actually have to track specific types of animal and really examine your surroundings, and also came across loads of ace random encounters in the process. Dudes fighting, people trying to rob you, even a treasure hunter being held up. I saved him, and he gave me a treasure map in return, which was just obscure and subtle enough to make tracking it down incredibly satisfying and really fuckin' fun.

That's not counting all the multiplayer fun had earlier in the day Looking forward to that co-op mission pack.

Could be one of the better games released this year, all in all.

Not one of the better games, THE best!! Well at least so far, only narrowly edging out Mass Effect 2 due to the multiplayer stuff. Still a few games to be released by the end of the year tho so its top spot placing may not be final.

Hell of a year, 'init? Still got a new Halo, a WoW expansion, Portal 2, Alpha Protocol, the next Fallout, Fable III, a new Call of Duty, a new Medal of Honour, and - if rumours are to be believed - a new Zelda still to come this year.

Nuts.

Red Dead? So bad ass. Can't stop playing. Easily Rockstar's best game yet

Ive just finished my first mission in Mexico with about 33% of the game done.

EDIT : Actually that completion percentage was wrong as I took the info from the Rockstar Social Club webpage and it hadnt updated my actual progress. Its now at 46.4%

Tho for once I am glad that the Euro release date was behind the rest as it gave me time to commit to playing Red Dead Redemption without any distractions.
Did I tell you I've obtained 100% single player completion? I'm such a hardcore outlaw!!

Tho looking at your progress you do still have 1 story related mission to go (from a stranger within Blackwater if I remember correctly), albeit its more of an epilogue
Sure you could argue that they way it ended was a bit cliche for its Wild West setting but its only cliche because it works so well within that genre.
I think Rockstar were very clever in the way they ended the main story part of the game but still enabled you to continue doing all the other missions/challenges etc without resorting to an older save.
And I'm man enough to admit that during said shocking scene I did nearly tear up at the loss So much so that I used lyrics from the Deadman's Gun song off the Red Dead soundtrack on my Facebook status since it conveys the feelings reflected in the game at that point.

I thought the entire couple o' hours that followed Dutch's death were inspired. Figured it would just have a lil' cutscene then roll credits as with any other game, but going back to your every day life and just hanging out with your family was a really nice way to wind down.

The thing is...it started going on a little too long, and then I started feeling tense. Like something was gonna go horribly wrong here. Then the dudes try to steal your cattle, and I SHAT myself - I was thinking "Oh FUCK, here's where it all goes to hell". That was oddly the tensest fight in the whole game for me, just for that reason - but I held 'em off. Then Jake went off bear hunting and I thought "ARGHHH this is it". But he was okay. And with that, I started to think the game might have a happy ending after all.

Fuckers.

Did a massive air punch when it panned back and I saw that you were playing homeboy all grown up at the end though. First thing that went through my head was...REVENGE So aye, I figured there was one last "mission" left to do.

Shit heads are all gonna pay.

I agree, I thought it was a poignant end when you saw Jack at both the graves but pleased that you took control of him to carry on.

Lots of people have been bitching online about the end part of the game as they dont really like Jack. I can understand what they are saying since, even tho he is older, he does still have a bit of a annoying voice and lets face it he just isnt as badass as John. But since your exposure to him is far less that what we experienced with John its not difficult to see why peeps just dont feel the same connection to him.
Playing as Jack didnt bother me and I can see why Rockstar played it out the way they did, you couldnt have had the prompt for revengeful feelings if you didnt feel a loss at Johns death. And even tho it wasnt a happy ever after ending it did give an option of resolution to the story which wouldve been worse had it just ended with his demise.
Tho it has also been suggested that Rockstar only left it that way to open up future DLC with Jack but Im not sure if thats really true (tho would be nice to give some background of the time between those 3 years).

One thing that I was impressed with was that after said end mission with Jack I still had 1 stranger mission which I missed so I went back to do it expecting just talk from the person giving the mission (ie with no responses from Jack, similar to the Mass Effect 2 DLC stuff) but he responded and had conversations like John would have so Im guessing that the voice actor for Jack may have recorded all the relevant responses for all the side missions in the game, since it is possible to do none of them and get to that final stage. If so thats damn cool. I know he does have some dialogue in general play as to get the $5000 bounty achievement I had to kill a lot of lawmen and during it he did shout on a few occasions "Do you know who my father is?" Seems to be bringing the multiplayer more in-line with what we were perhaps expecting out the gate. Tons and tons of new challenges to fart around with (over a hundred!), along with a new 4 player co-op campaign with proper missions. Free AFAIK.
